Ada Colau bildet als Bürgermeisterin der Metropole Barcelona die Speerspitze einer neuen munizipalistischen Bewegung, die mit radikal-basisdemokratischen Ansätzen die Institutionen für eine Politik von unten öffnet und damit die etablierte Stadtpolitik auf den Kopf stellt. Regisseur Pau Faus begleitet die Frontfrau der Bürger*innen-Plattform Barcelona en Comu ein Jahr lang - von ihrem Kampf gegen Zwangsräumungen mit der PAH bis zur siegreichen Kür im politischen David-gegen-Goliath Wettkampf bei den spanischen Kommunalwahlen im Frühjahr 2015.

Der Film portraitiert einen Prozess, den man „Basisdemokratie als Werkstatt“ nennen könnte: Alle Schritte werden kollektiv im Handeln erfunden und die finanzielle und mediale Unterlegenheit durch eine immer größere Menge an Mitstreiter*innen wettgemacht. Dass die Dokumentation dabei auch in hohem Umfang zu einer teilnehmenden Beobachtung des Lebens der Spitzenkandidatin wurde, bezeichnet Faus’ als weder beabsichtigt noch zufällig, sondern unvermeidlich. Der Film präsentiert kein fertiges, gültiges, unzweifelhaftes Bild einer Politikerin, sondern reflektiert statt dessen die Produktion solcher Bilder im laufenden Betrieb. Ada Colau wird am Ende des Films eine andere geworden und die gleiche geblieben sein – eine Unmöglichkeit, die zu bewältigen Anspruch und ständige Aufgabe ist. Frei nach dem Motto, das Ada Colau nach ihrer Ernennung zur allseitigen Erinnerung in den Räumen des Stadtrats anbringen ließ: „Lasst uns niemals vergessen, wer wir sind und warum wir hier sind.“ (Dank an Ralph Eue, DOK Leipzig)

An urban revolution in Barcelona

Ada Colau is a former squatter and long-time activist of the PAH, a broad movement against forced evictions in Barcelona and other Spanish cities. When it comes to unite the fragmented left in the city in order to participate in the municipal elections 2015, Colau qualifies as the frontwoman of the citizens platform "Barcelona en Comú". The goal: Becoming the mayor of Barcelona.

As the mayor of the metropolis of Barcelona, Ada Colau is the spearhead of a new municipalist movement, which opens up the institutions for a policy from below with radically democratic approaches, thus turning established urban politics upside down. Director Pau Faus accompanies the frontwoman of the citizens' platform Barcelona en Comu for a year – from her fight against forced evictions with the PAH until the victory of the citizens platform in a political David-against-Goliath-competition in the Spanish municipal elections in spring 2015.

The documentary film portrays a process that could be called "grassroot-democracy as a workshop": Innovative strategies are collectively invented in action and the competitive disadvantages regarding finances and media are made up by an ever increasing number of fellow activists. The fact that the documentary in large parts has also become a portrait of Ada Colaus daily life as a candidate was described by Faus as neither intentional nor accidental, but inevitable. The film does not present a finished, valid, unquestioning picture of a politician, but instead reflects on the production of such images during ongoing operations. At the end, Ada Colau will have changed and remained the same - an impossibility she needs to cope with as a set task. According to the motto that Ada Colau wrote on the mayors office door as a reminder for all after her appointment: "Let us never forget who we are and why we are here."

On Tuesday Oct. 12th the panel-discussion Munizipalismus - Reclaiming Democracy will provide further insights into the development of the new municipalism, an inspiring and hopeful counter-project to the Europe of Austerity, fighting the rising injustice in capitalist societies and building an alternative to the policy of isolationism of the European states in refugee policy.
