4 Stelle in Rom ist ein ehemals leerstehendes, von Migrant*innen besetztes 4-Sterne-Hotel. Eine multimediale Web-Dokumentation erzählt die Geschichte dieses multiethnischen Wohnblocks für 250 Familien aus mehr als 30 Ländern durch die Geschichte seiner Bewohner*innen, die Tag für Tag mit der Schaffung einer einzigartigen gemischten Gesellschaft experimentieren, in der Rassismus und Vorurteile verschwinden.

Der Film A început ploaia (It started raining) des Stadtforschers Michele Lancione erzählt die Geschichte der 100 Bewohner*innen der Vulturilor-Straße 50 in Bukarest, die nach ihrer Zwangsräumung im September 2014 beschlossen auf der Straße vor ihrem Haus ein Protestkamp zu errichten. Die Besetzung dauerte bis Juni 2016 und ist der längste und bekannteste Protest für ein Recht auf Wohnen im heutigen Rumänien. Der Dokumentarfilm ist das Ergebnis einer mehr als zwei-jährigen ethnographischen Feldforschung über Zwangsräumungen von Roma in Bukarest, die gleichzeitig Möglichkeiten der Selbstermächtigung und Schaffung von Gegenöffentlichkeit durch die Verknüpfung von aktivistischer Arbeit, akademischer Forschung und visuellen Methoden erkundet.

Michele Lancione ist Stadtforscher und arbeitet an der University of Sheffield. Neben seiner akademischen Tätigkeit ist er vielseitig in aktivistische Prozesse eingebunden, permanent auf der Suche nach neuen, kreativen Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationsformen als Werkzeuge für Forschung und Aktivismus.

Valerio Muscella ist Fotograf und Dokumentarist mit Fokus auf sozialen Bewegungen, Housing Rights und Migration. Er ist Teil von Cro.M.A. (Cross Media Action), ein unabhängiges Multimedia-Kollektiv. Eines ihrer Projekte, 4Stelle Hotel, wurde 2015 mit dem DIG Award für Crossmedia Reporting ausgezeichnet.

Für die Teilnahme am Public Seminar wird die Anwesenheit beim Vorabendpanel Housing Rights, Media and Self-Organization vorausgesetzt.

Das Public Seminar Place Internationale Wien des Social Design Studio, einer Abteilung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, eröffnet für 7 Tage einen öffentlichen Ort des Lehrens und Lernens für eine post-babylonische Stadtgesellschaft: Vom Turmbau zu Babel bis zur Refugee-Bewegung, von der Pariser Commune bis zum heutigen Kampf um Wohnraum lädt Jochen Becker/metrozones Berlin gemeinsam mit internationalen Gästen zur Erkundung von Post-Babylon als Ort des Sprechens in vielen Zungen, um so zu gemeinsamen Wissen, Artikulation und Handeln zu gelangen.

Public Seminar - Counter-Narratives for the Right to Housing

4Stelle Hotel in Rome is a vacant 4 star hotel, occupied by migrants, and a multimedia web documentary that tells the story of this block of flats for 250 families from more than 30 countries. The documentary A început ploaia (It started raining) portrays 100 residents in Bucharest, who spent two years in a street protest camp in front of their house after a forced eviction in 2014. How important is the creation of counter-narratives for urban struggles? What can visual media, artistic strategies and urban research provide for social urban movements and the right to housing? Discussion and presentation with activist and photographer Valerio Muscella/Cro.M.A.(4Stelle Hotel) and activist, urban ethnographer and filmmaker Michele Lancione (A început ploaia).

In the workshop, Valerio Muscella and Michele Lancione will present their way of working and examine the question of what artistic and research strategies can achieve for activism and the production of counter public spheres.

Michele Lancione is an urban ethnographer and works at the University of Sheffield. In addition to his academic activities, he is constantly involved in activist processes and searching for new, creative forms of expression and communication. He is the author of a novel about homelessness in Italy based on real events.

Valerio Muscella is a photographer and documentalist with a focus on social movements, housing rights and migration. He is part of Cro.M.A. (Cross Media Action), an independent multimedia collective. One of their projects, 4Stelle Hotel, was awarded the DIG Award for Crossmedia Reporting in 2015.
