-English version on subpage!-

Christina Schraml

Urban Crush Zone

Emanuele Agati, urban activist from Rome, and urbanist Christina Schraml, Social Design Studio, invite you to a social housing area in Viennas 2nd district in search of what once was, what might be missing and what could be. The walk explores a monofunctional large-scale residential district between the Viennese Prater and the Danube, whose development is currently at a critical turning point. Many of the buildings are growing old and the U2-underground that connects the area with the city center for 10 years by now generates transformation processes in the adjoining district which puts the residential area under pressure: An urban crush zone with potential?

Christina Schraml

The monofunctional residential buildings along the streets of Handelskai, Engerthstraße and Vorgartenstraße were built from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. The public space in the district is dominated by car traffic. The green areas between the houses do not create common public space and the ground floor shows a high vacancy rate. Altogether the entire neighborhood seems to be missing a connecting identity. Since the expansion of the subway line 2 in 2008, the district has undergone rapid development in the surrounding areas: a number of new real-estate investment projects have already been implemented or are currently being planned, resulting in conflicts between the old and the new. The Viennese urbanist Christina Schraml and the political scientist, boxer and social worker Emanuele Agati from Rome invite you to a walk, exploring the problem in the district, the public in the open spaces, looking for people, ideas and hidden community resources in this Viennese area with potential.

Christina Schraml is a Vienna-based urbanist (practice and theory), whose work is situated at the intersection of urbanism and arts/culture. She holds a master of Arts in European Urban Cultures and a master of Philosophy. Since 2012 Christina teaches at Social Design/University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Emanuele Agati is a social worker, boxer and political scientist from Rome. He is part of a collective which runs the Palestra Popolare Quarticciolo project in a socially deprived area of Rome. The project stands in the tradition of Italian and Spanish Red Gyms, that serve as sports hall, community center, music school, laboratory for the history of the district and information center for the struggle for housing.

On Sunday, Oct 8th, 2-5pm, Emanuele Agati and Enrico Tomassini will host the workshop Palestra Popolare - Community Space at the AzW.
